Stamp Mix #19: Rayko

Take a leisurely stroll down the feed of Rayko’s Soundcloud and you’ll understand why he’s considered one of the kings of the disco edit. His output is nothing short of prolific. It was a bit off-putting when we first came across him – we expected most to be quickly-made fillers in between releases – but the quality rarely wavered. His subjects are ambitious, from Jimi Hendricks to Michael Jackson, but he also delved much deeper in disco history to reveal the depth of his passion for the genre. Cant Get Enough is his latest offering, packed full of more great edits (including the MJ one below). In the wake of that release, Rayko has kindly put together a mix for us and answered a few questions.

Cant Get Enough EP is out now on Retrospective Records.

For our readers who may not be familiar with you, could you introduce yourself and describe what music you make.

I’m a Disco DJ/producer from Spain.

It’s no secret that the popularity of boogie and disco has increased recently. As someone who’s been presiding over the scene for a while, it would be interesting to hear why you think this is?

I don’t know, but maybe after a long period of dark music (mainly techno in all it forms) doing the business on the dancefloor, people want something groovier!

Can you pinpoint a few tracks which first got you into disco and boogie?

Harry Thumann – Underwater

Supermax – Love Machine

The Alan Parsons Project – Mammagamma

Rufus & Chaka Khan – Ain´t Nobody

Barcelona seems to be Spain’s most prominent city, musically, but what’s the scene like in your hometown, Madrid?

To be honest I really don’t go out too much. I have a residency in a small but uber crazy club (Moroder Sound Club) and when I’m in Madrid I’ll play there. But apart from that I don’t have a proper idea of what is going on in other clubs in the city.

Are there any local artists who are exciting you at the moment?

Ilya Santana, Nelue, The Two Mamarrachos just to name a few.

The edit you’ve done of MJ’s Rock My World (above) on the new EP is one of many great reworks of classic tracks under your belt. You’ve previously mentioned how hard it is to choose your subject, so what makes a good one in your eyes? And what sort of thing do you look for when choosing?

Each time is different I guess. But with the better ones, I find that it’s the track itself that guides you through the proccess.

I know it’s quite hard to be evaluative of your own work, especially given how high you output is, but if you could pick you three favourite edits, what would they be?

Maybe, if I have to chose only three, I could mention my edit of Womack & Womack’s Conscious of my Conscience, Barbara Keith’s All around the Watchtower, and Fonda Rae’s Touch Me [on Cant Get Enough EP]

What was the idea behind the mix you’ve done for us?

I tried to create an elegant atmosphere and use tracks with a high musical component.

You’ve got an album coming out on Nang soon. What can we expect from that?

This album is a wide example of the kind of music I love to play in parties. It’s music made for those dancers who love to do tricky manoeuvres in the dancefloor!

And finally, where can people hear you live in the near future, in the UK and Europe?

In September you can find me in Oslo, Helsinki, Milan and Budapest.
