Live Review: #YouNeedToHearThis Consumer Launch Party

DSC_0137

Buried deep down in the voguish part of East London, last week NOISEY and Philips put on a swanky get-together to celebrate the launch of their new platform, You Need To Hear This. Amongs a slight haze of endless drinks from the open bar, and far too many photo booth pictures with randoms, it was certainly clear that these guys know how to throw a good party. Around a gigantic ship that appeared to have conveniently docked in the middle of the first room (do you expect anything less from Dalston?), the venue was dotted in each corner with Philips’ new line of Citiscape headphones to try out. We’ve actually been given some by #YNTHT and after a few weeks of using them we can honestly recommend copping a pair. In short: crystal clear sound, warm mid-range and comfortable beyond belief. Anyway, back to the party…

Ever since we featured a tour video of them on a trip to Mongolia, Indie-trio Is Tropical have remained fixed on our radar. Their unique brand of Electronic-Indie music – peppered with pop-sensibilities – is rather difficult not to like. They put on a good show early in the night, warm tones that warmed bodies.

#YouNeedToHearThis also mentioned a surprise artist would be performing later in the night. There were a plethora of hopeful whispers (Kanye being the most optimistic), but when Mount Kimbie graced the stage, we couldn’t have been more ecstatic. Kings of the Ambient (Post)Dubstep movement alongside James Blake, Koreless, Sepalcure, Jacques Greene etc, Mount Kimbie knew exactly how put the whole place in a trance. From organic wooden knocks and lush pads to tech-beats and garage bass-stabs, the boys played a nice mix of new tracks from their sophomore album Cold Spring Fault Less Youth and their genius debut Crooks & Lovers.

It was a brilliant end to a great night. Check out the new music platform #YouNeedToHearThis for more exclusive music content, short films, interviews and so much more. If this is your first time reading about #YNTHT, check out our other posts below:
