This time last year I must admit I wasn’t the biggest fan of House Music, put off by its minimal and repetitive side. Little did I know there is much more to it than that and that a resurgence was well under way, with a bass-heavy and club-friendly variety. Maya Jane Coles is now at the forefront of this resurgence making her a perfect candidate for the latest instalment in the DJ-Kicks compilation series.
Packing 22 tunes into 70 minutes, each track flows seamlessly into the next and shows off the range of Maya’s musical taste. It definitely reveals the more accessible side of House with a vocal hook in most tracks, but this is no bad thing at all. Remixed classics (It’s A Crime), euphoric drops (Guess Who) and even African vocal samples (Karoo) are all present in the first half. Then, changing to her Nocturnal Sunshine guise for Meant To Be, MJC then takes the mix on a darker turn with some more 2-step influenced sounds. It’s a sign of things to come, as we’re told her debut album will be much more along these lines than the House that has led her on such a meteoric rise.
As a first taste of House music or a insight for longstanding fans into where Maya is taking her music next, this installement of DJ Kicks is a resounding success. Listen to our favourite picks below and head over to Rise to buy it.
