Melbourne-based label, Efficient Space, give us a rare glimpse into the world of Aboriginal song with this collection of tracks that beautifully traverse both the traditional and contemporary.
Originally recorded in the mid-90s by three Yolngu songmen and electronic composer Peter Mumme, the songs from Waak Waak Djungi are the centuries-old cultural re-imaginings of the indigenous peoples of the Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory of Australia.
As with the other tracks on the record, ‘White Cockatoo’, is a poignant nod to the Yolngu people. The expansive, celebratory vocals capture the innocent and tribal essence of the culture with their spiritual connection to land and nature. The delicate, dreamscape percussion and bright, ambient synth that ebbs and flows throughout, sustains the simplistic but joyous vocals. A unique and subtly uplifting creation.
Waak Waak ga Min Min is out on 8th June – buy from Bandcamp.
