Day 17: Brother Portrait – Y.O.U

Day 17 of our charity Advent Calendar in aid of The Steve Reid Foundation.

Today Sierra Leonean Black British artist Brother Portrait brings us a love-induced vibe that blends spoken word poetry and hip-hop with a skitty jazz ambient groove. A new artist on our radar, Brother Portrait is a shining star of UK talent that we’ll be keeping a watchful eye on in 2017, and one third of hip-hop trio Black/Other who are pushing UK music forward in their own right.

Under his solo moniker, today we unravel the perfect Saturday afternoon jam. Mixing heart-felt lyrics with jazzy horns, twinkling Fender Rhodes trills and a snappy snare drum that keeps the groove going. If you like this we suggest wrapping your ears and eyes around his debut video featured on OkayAfrica recently. Shouts to Alex Rita for the hook up too!

Download ‘Y.O.U’ from our Bandcamp. It’s pay-what-you-like, with all proceeds going to The Steve Reid Foundation, a charity founded by Gilles Peterson that aims to support musicians in dedication to the visionary jazz drummer.
