Premiere: Ross From Friends – Gettin’ It Done

With a name choice as brazen as Ross From Friends, you’d except his accompanying productions to be similarly cavalier (*sidewards glance to DJ Detweiler and his flutedrop specials). But facetious name choices is where the playtime ends for this young London producer, who has developed quite a cult following through just one solo EP last year and a handful of unreleased Youtube uploads. They may not favour the pigeon-holing, but, alongside Mall Grab and Frits Wentink, Ross From Friends has become a name synonymous with the lo-fi house bloom of late and so this sophomore release with Lobster Theremin offshoot Distant Hawaii carries sizeable excitement and expectation.

Our favourite, ‘Getting It Done’, is one of those aforementioned Youtube lingerers, and a quick browse through their comments section suggests we’re not the only fans. Dusty percussion, chopped MPC wizadry and fuzzy RnB vocal licks all combine to consolidate the EP’s 90s aesthetic, further underpinned by the label’s very deliberate visual identity. More adept A&Ring by Distant Hawaii to snap these up at the opportune moment, and further sign of a prodigious young talent rising in stature.

You’ll Understand is out 29th July – pre-order from the Lobster Theremin website.
