Premiere: Alessandro Alessandroni – Afro Discoteca

Back in 1925, the birth of Alessandro Alessandroni might have predated Gerard Kenny’s famous ‘New York, New York‘ but his line “so good they named it twice” can be just as applicable to the Italian composer.

Alessandroni is seen as one of the greats of Italian film soundtracks, a pioneer for the genre alongside Ennio Morricone and Piero Umiliana in the 60s and 70. It became a fertile period for library and experimental music, much of which never saw official release but still stands the test of time better than many of the Spaghetti Westerns that catalysed their inception.

Pierpaolo de Sanctis and his Four Flies Records dug into Alessandroni’s vast archives and found a dusty tape with an “Afro Discoteca” label written on the front. Previously unreleased, it contained four tracks mixing African influences with that distinctive Italian cinematic aesthetic and Alessandroni’s rich string instrumentation. Listen to the title track premiered below.

Afro Discoteca is out 27th March – buy from Bandcamp.
