Premiere: Lynda Dawn – Move

13 editions in and Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Bubblers comps continue to prove an invaluable tip-off for lesser-known music. The music might’ve morphed and shifted with the times, but the principal remains the same: tomorrow’s headliners gearing up for the boil.

Reflecting Brownswood’s recent output and the mood of its locality, BB13 is heavily geared towards jazz, hip-hop and soul but also reaches as far as New York, Amsterdam and Toronto. London is the source for compilation highlight by the relatively unknown Lynda Dawn.

“The song came about quite organically to be honest”, she tells us, recalling how Al Dobson Jr player her an unused beat a couple years ago. “I fell in love with it instantly and wrote the track in its entirety on the same day.” Heavily influenced by the rare groove, boogie, soul and jazz from school runs with her parents, ‘Move’ is unashamedly nostalgic but stays clear of copycatting. Original music penned by two Londoners, with a full EP planned for early next year makes for exciting proposition.

Brownswood Bubblers 13 it out now on digital and 30th November on vinyl – buy from Bandcamp.
