Premiere: Zmatsutsi – Wet Grout (Joe’s Dub)

Self-evident in Joe Gill’s Leeds Spotlight earlier this year, Outlaws Yacht Club is a place where the oddball spirits in Leeds are embraced. Joe’s curation of the bar-come-club, and its striking artwork from Jonny Cosmic, mirrors a self-confessed weirdness that gives Outlaws its own unique musical agenda. Joe’s band Zmatsutsi, formed with Tim Hutton and Heidi Armitage, roams around this same left field territory and with ‘Wet Grout’, Joe’s Dub finds itself in the sci-fi dustbowl middle ground between Mike Oldfield and Dire Straits. A 70 bpm chugger that Sacha Mambo would pull for early doors and, conjuring up images of swinging in a hammock too holey to get settled but with just enough thread to stop you from finding somewhere more comfortable.

Joe’s Dub is taken from a VA EP titled Various Lurkers on Space Ritual. Out 30th March – buy from Juno. Artwork by Hamish Brindley.
