Since we first set foot inside Bygrave Woods in 2013, we’ve seen Farr Festival grow as quickly as the saplings that now stand as tall trunks between the imposing speaker stacks. 2016 felt like Farr properly knew who they were and what they were about and it was reflected in their most successful to date.
While many festival announcements suffer from too many similarities, the early signs suggest Farr are branching further, not just into new realms of dance music, but sounds that reflect it back into other connected strands. Take Music From Memory, a label putting out new and reissued ambient, new wave and balearic oddities, run by obeyers of the obscure, Jamie Tiller, Tako and Abel. The latter two also run the record shop wing of Red Light Radio, who join as stage hosts alongside Brilliant Corners, in a clear sign that Farr are embracing the diggers as a big part of the lineup this year. Born from that culture too, Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter bring their Mister Saturday Night party and label, while UK contemporaries The Hydra and Abandon Silence accompany. This year sees the return of Boy’s Own, Heist Recordings and The Ransom Note.
