Arnheim is a student from the school of negative space, self-assured in the knowledge that a softer, more subtle approach can have just as much power in a piece of music. This time last year, his EP for Greta Cottage Workshop was a lesson in restraint, patiently arranged with only a handful of elements teasing and undulating. His latest release for Barbara Recordings, titled Floras of Autumn, takes much the same approach, except this time Arnheim adds a human element. Nothing that overwhelms the palette, mind. Like Erykah Badu caresses each and every beat she sings over, Arnheim employs Shama Joseph’s vocals to silky smooth perfection, around the handheld percussion hits and delicate piano notes.
Floras of Autumn is out 9th December.
