Ever since we laid our ears on Melbourne’s premium velvet-groove generator Harvey Sutherland back in 2014, we’ve been dreaming of the chance to throw a camera in front of him to snap his mastery at work. Armed to the teeth with analog gear and cosmic harmonies, it’s his placement of sound that has given his music a sense of timelessness: live and crispy hi-hats dart through soft Rhodes chords and lo-fi jazzy leads like a hot knife through butter. And the groove? Well, that is a love affair that only the Roland Juno-60 and Harvey’s fingers can explain.
When Harvey was in town a few week ago, we were given exclusive access to secretsundaze’s brand new studio, a hardware paradise of rare synthesisers, drum machines, ex-BBC audio equipment and lo-fi outboard delay and echoes. Of course Harvey took to it like it was his childhood home, and we snapped him freestyling brand new material that had us all spine-tingly for a few hours after.
