The hip-house sound is alive and well in Europe at the minute. Money $ex Records and ava. get nuff love in this digital realm, but, moving further east, there’s plenty of creativity going down in Russia too. In Beat-Ween Music, a label run by Local Talk man Lay-Far have planted the flag firmly on Russian soil with their latest release from beatmakers Boorane. With longstanding hip-hop credentials dating back to the early noughties, as DJs and b-boys, Boora and Krane chop up obscure Soviet samples on their Akai MPC 300 and E-Mu-1200 and churn out soulful, well-crafted, dusty house with a Pete Rock aesthetic. Our pick from the EP, ‘V Rhytmah Jazza’, is jazzed up to the nines with enough swagger to hold its own on the dancefloor.
Thru Jazz To Mars is out 19th June – pre-order from Juno.
