They may be nearly a decade apart in age but the musical connection between Swedish pairing, Mr Tophat and Art Alfie, is anything but far removed. Both established solo artists, there’s something naturally unified about their joint productions, a sum of simple elements, groovy samples and a no frills beat framework.
The duo share a deep rooted love for disco, a characteristic evident throughout their large back catalogue and the releases on their imprint, Karlovak. Since its conception in 2011, they’ve taken a DIY approach to the label, which has showcased releases from Ben Sims, Radio Slave and plenty of their own material.
Our premiere ‘Skunk Silver’ is next up on Karvolak’s schedule. This time shunning the deep chug we’ve come to know of the pair, we are taken on a journey through 11 minutes of sample rich magic. The sultry vocals of Ursula Rucker sampled from Firefly’s ‘Supernatural’ narrate the track, while jovial strings and drum thumps pitch in and out. Showcasing the sunnier side of their productions they still stay true to fashion with a straightforward beat laying the foundation and certifying it as, without a doubt, one for the dancefloor.
KLVK 7 is out on 27th May – pre-order from Juno.
