We don’t like bandying around the word ‘scene’ if we can help it, but there does seem to be a lineage emerging for a dubby, ever-so-wonky blend of techno in the West Country, even if many (including our subject today) may not still be based there. Following familiar faces like Kowton, Hodge, Bruce, Ploy and Rhythmic Theory, Gramrcy has been setting out his stall nicely over the last year, with releases for Berceuse Heroique and Drakeford’s FTD. For this playlist, he tips his hat to the bar staff, offering a selection that one might expect when he warms up for his Bristol party Housework.
Catch Gramrcy warming up for Objekt and DVS1 at Just Jack this Friday in Bristol. The next Housework night welcomes Cal Super on 9th April.
1991 – Tangerine Lidl (Outro)
It’s always nice to play some ambient stuff for the bar-staff early on. No-one wants to listen to kickdrums all night.
Call Super – Sulu Sekou
Rainforest-techno-not-techno from consistent genius J.R.
Morphosis – ‘Gate Of Night’
From his amazing album What We Have Learned, this chiming trip is one of Rabih Beaini’s best.
Kangding Ray – ‘Konstructiv’
More ideas on rhythm.
Basic Channel – ‘Quadrant Dub I’
Somehow Basic Channel records are able to fit into any set, at any time.
Matthew Oh – ‘Underwater Caverns’
Heavy, heavy vibes.
Space Afrika – ‘A1’
From their debut release on the Where To Now? label. Cassette-only, though luckily you get the digital when you buy a copy so I don’t have to bring my Walkman to the club.
Claro Intelecto – ‘Momento’
A confusing time signature that makes a lot of sense.
Ploy – ‘Move Yourself’
Latest Hessle release and the debut for my good friend’s new alias. Never has bongo house sounded less cheesy. Do some digging and hunt out his previous work – it’s all killer.
Alvin Aronson – ‘Mat’
Smart transmission from the always impressive NORD Records out of Denmark.
