The Get Down retells the birth of hip-hop in 70’s Brooklyn.
Baz Luhrmann, director of the memorable 1996 Romeo and Juliet adaptation and more recent big screen dramas, Australia and The Great Gatsby, is the creator of a new Netflix series The Get Down depicting hip hop’s birth in the South Bronx during the late 70s. With Grandmaster Flash and veteran music journalist Nelson George enlisted as consultants on the script, the fictional 13-episode drama follows the music’s journey in the “broken down and beaten up, violent, cash strapped” New York city borough, through the eyes of a group of South Bronx kids. Luhrmann who first had the idea for the show over ten years ago has directed the first two episodes and the season finale, whilst acting as executive producer for the remainder. The series is expected to air later in the Autumn.
