Premiere: Simple Symmetry – Whip Me In The Saloon!

Simple Symmetry is the moniker of the Moscow-born Lipsky brothers. Their music finds itself wedged between a hugely varied base of influences, from ambient to the more lively electronica, with middle-eastern elements thrown in for good measure. Released on Dutch label XXX, this EP is only their second release and is peppered with gorgeous synth work and jazz-inspired melody. Nowhere is this more readily audible than on our pick of the bunch, ‘Whip Me In The Saloon!’, a figurehead in the new cowboy disco movement we hear is sweeping through the Siberian wild west at the moment. Beginning almost like a new Lauer tune, the punchy bassline and ordered percussion soon give way to a guitar riff worthy of the stadium rock we grew up on. As more elements build, a jazz piano is brought to the foreground, and a blues harmonica offers a euphoric climax. The track has been on quite a journey too, “born in the heart of Moscow with a pit stop in Italy to get the final make over in Kiev”, yet it all seems so coherent, from its percussive elements to the disparate melodies and italo flavour.

XXX002 is out 29th January on XXX. Pre-order from Juno and Decks.
