Monday Morning Mixtape regulars will know that underpinning the DNA of this series is a love-laden bringing together of different cultures and diversity in sound. Most weeks we gather tracks from around the world with the simple aim of easing you into your morning routine, but today comes with a plea…
A good friend of ours (and outright wonderful human being) Lara was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia a few weeks ago, and will need a stem cell donor urgently to save her life. Lara is 24-years-old and a beautiful mix of Italian, Chinese and Thai heritage. But being mixed race means that finding a matching bone marrow donor is extremely difficult. Less than 3% of donors on the worldwide bone marrow donor registry are of mixed race… and only a small portion of them are Asian-European like Lara.
Simply by joining a national bone marrow registry you can provide a potential gift of life to Lara and others like her in their time of greatest need. It’s literally as easy as spitting into a test tube or using a cheek swab. If you turn out to be a match for Lara or one of the 12,000 other people around the world in need, you could save a life!
Already #Match4Lara has been supported by The Huffington Post, Daily Mail, The Independent, ITV, Metro, Stephen Fry, Jon Snow, Jack Whitehall and Labour MP for Hampstead and Kilburn Tulip Siddiq, and we need your help to keep the momentum going.
If you haven’t already joined your national bone marrow registry, we urge you to do so here (it’s unbelievably quick and free). You can tweet about the campaign using the hashtag #Match4Lara and head here for more information. Please please share this information with everyone you know!
Today’s mixtape brings together 1973 vibrant Siamese soul and 1969 Thai country groove alongside 1962 Italian cinematic jazz and an 1967 ouzo-fuelled dancefloor saga from Greece by way of Tel Aviv.
