Two months ago, we revealed initial details of Gilles Peterson’s iconic Worldwide Awards, announcing London’s own Little Simz and the Yussef Kamal trio as the first acts to be billed for the 2016 edition of the iconic event. If that got you excited, you’ll be bouncing off the walls like a caffeinated toddler with these additions!
Gilles has curated a special one off ‘super band’ consisting of artists that have never performed on stage together: LA Saxophonist Kamasi Washington, Texan trumpeter Leron Thomas and all round musical marvel Eska head up the band, with the latter also the official Musical Director of the collaboration. Mobo Awards Best Jazz Act of 2015 Moses Boyd will also join the band, adding his impressive skills as drummer, composer, producer and electronic musician. The strength and diversity already in this mix promise an esoteric performance who’s only known quantity is quality.
Manchester based Matthew Halsall & The Gondwana Orchestra add further weight to the band side of the line-up, whilst hotly tipped, London based producer Deft and Rinse’s very own Josey Rebelle represent the electronic spectrum.
We saw Kamasi perform last month and at times, the performance was otherworldly. It really blew us away. WWA is well on its way to curating a night full of these same moments, and with more announcements in the pipelines, the 16th of Jan couldn’t come sooner.
