Almost two years on from their first LP, Italian duo Nu Guinea are back with a seven-track album of coastal grooves and Italo-boogie that captures the rich tapestry of cultures, colours and sounds that has influenced music in their hometown, Napoli.
Although known for their house and techno production individually, together Lucio Aquilina and Massimo Di Lena look to the world for inspiration. Having first released on Danish-based Tartelet Records – laden with global percussive sounds – and a widely praised LP on Comet Records in collaboration with Tony Allen, the pair continue to show their eclectic taste and talent on Nuova Napoli. Written, arranged and produced by Massimo and Lucio, the album also seeks help from contemporary Neapolitan musicians and is the result of extensive research into the city’s musical history.
Our pick, the third track on the A-side, is a smooth, Italo boogie number that dips its toes in the African side of the Mediterranean. The enticing lyrics play nicely with the classic, earthy Jupiter 6 – a favourite throughout the album – alongside punchy drums and raw keys delivered by some of the aforementioned locals. ‘Ddoje Facce’ is an honest representation of 70s and 80s Napoli, from two homegrown talents proud to show their heritage to the world.
Nuova Napoli is out 27th March – buy from Bandcamp.
