Premiere: Felix Leifur – Berg Toppur (Hidden Spheres Rocky Top Remix)

Last summer Hidden Spheres inaugurated Lobster Theremin’s Distant Hawaii sub-label with Waiting EPfull of gentle percussion, soulful samples and summery keys. A much-lauded debut, it set him up as one of the most exciting new house producers in the UK and a follow-up for a London label (the clues are there if you look hard enough!) is incoming very soon.

Before that arrives, we’ve been teased more new material in the form of a remix for Icelandic producer Felix Leifur, on his new EP for Dirt Crew Recordings. Like Hidden Spheres’ calling card, ‘Waiting’, a pattering of bongos usher in the ‘Berg Topper’ remix with light, sparkling keys contrasting the neck-bobbing bassline. Percussive layers continue to build until the minute mark approaches, where powerful vocals enter as the track reaches his climax, even if it is just for a fleeting moment. As with previous productions, there’s a clear sense of restraint to Hidden Spheres’ work, not satisfied to churn out house bangers, but offer up something a bit more nuanced. It’s an approach that one him favour with the the Lobster Theremin and Rhythm Section families and helps make this remix such a triumph.

Felix Leifur’s The Sunday Club EP is out 16th May and available to pre-order from the Dirt Crew website.
