On very rare occasions you hear a riff, beat or voice that stops you in your tracks. Get 40 seconds into Home, the opener on @Peace’s self-titled album, and you can add the Auckland 5-piece to your short list. Auckland you say? Yes Hip-Hop like this can in fact be made away from America’s sacred shores. All raised on a healthy diet of Jazz and Funk, @Peace fuses intelligent lyricists with talented, creative musicians and producers. The result is a combination of infectious beats, and thoughtful, well-delivered verse that rivals the best of A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. Yes they’re not pioneers in the same way, but @Peace are re-engaging those values that made the former two so great. They’re flying the flag, not just for an underexposed New Zealand scene, but for the whole of Hip-hop. God knows the genre could do with more groups like this.
Check out two stunners below, but go buy their whole album here. Be generous, good hip-hop doesn’t pay for itself these days.
