Tiana Khasi made a splash in 2019 when she dropped her debut Meghalaya EP. Turning heads with her syrupy voice, piercing lyricism and poetic aptitude, the Melbourne-based vocalist has joined the ranks of what feels like a substantiated resurgence of compelling female soul voices, drawn from the blueprint of Erykah Badu and Jill Scott.
A year on and Tiana has returned to her creative conception, this time inviting close collaborators and those she admires to reinterpret her vision. Meghalaya – The Remixes brings together some of Australia and New Zealand’s finest for a record that playfully explores her original work and delivers eclectic results. Tiana has enlisted the talents of original EP producer Sampology, along with Horatio Luna, Street Rat, Best Foot Forward, choicevaughan and Benny Salvador.
Melbourne’s boom bap renaissance duo, SO.Crates come with a soul-stroked, hip-hop flip of ‘Georgia’s Track’. While producer Skomes chops up the stirring ballad like a dusty 70s soul loop, adding filtered samples, crispy drums and pitching up Tiana vocals, Californian-born, Melbourne-resident MC Cazeaux O.S.L.O glides over the beat with a relaxed consciousness, bending the track’s narrative. A cunning take that respectfully honours the original while adjusting the lens for a new outlook.
Meghalaya – The Remixes drops October 2, 2020 via Soul Has No Tempo.
