When you match two of London’s most hotly tipped jazz artists, the result is guaranteed to be something special. 44th Move is the brainchild of self-taught pianist Alfa Mist and Flying Lotus collaborator Richard Spaven; a new project that expresses their love for hip hop, broken beat and a myriad of other shared influences.
Individually both artists have notched up enviable accolades; Alfa Mist gaining international fan-driven success with his album Antiphon in 2017 and continuing that on his following releases Structuralism and On My Ones, and Spaven working with the likes of Flying Lotus, Jameszoo and The Cinematic Orchestra, as well as making moves with his own Richard Spaven Trio project.
The pair’s first outing as 44th Move finds a home on Black Acre – the Bristol-based label Alfa Mist holds close ties with – and sees them flirt with emotion throughout the release, capturing this essence through hazy, delicate chords, organic percussion and loose drum work.
44th Move will be released on Black Acre on 24th April – grab your copy.
