Dusty rhythms anchor jazz-flecked hip-hop on Bristol duo Summers Sons’ new release. Taken from the London-born brothers’ new album Undertones, out on German label Melting Pot Music, ‘The Feeling’ picks up the same blissful sample-led production that characterised their self-titled debut record.
In his youth, rapper Turt listened with half an ear to American hip-hop, but it was grime, with bars spat in his native accent, that inspired him to pick up the microphone, and gave him “a hunger to put pen to paper that’s never gone away.” You can hear those lyrical nods to grime on ‘The Feeling’ but Slim’s woozy production makes even lines like “never talk to the police” feel lazy and soulful.
Undertones will be released on 25 January. Pre-order from Melting Pot.
