Since first stealing away our attention back in 2014; London producer, composer and DJ, LAY, aka Layla Rutherford, has never strayed far from our thoughts. The enchanting ‘Still‘ was just one of an extremely strong collection of tracks on her debut EP, Portrait 01. After a short absence from the production game, LAY finally shares with us her latest; a weapon of sheer beauty from no doubt a gradually building trove of ideas we can’t wait to unlock.
We’re delighted to give the first listen to ‘I Don’t Belong To Anyone’, a remake of fellow big smoke dwellers and immensely talented trio, Hejira. Introducing calm-instilling frequencies from sustained violin and lazy drum patterns before adding deep resonating synths to complete the feel; Lay completely reinterprets the go-go rhythm influenced number laden with attitude, into one of complete unhurried nonchalance. The familiar vocal hook reappears frequently to remind you of the tracks origins; however it’s new running flow of Floating Points-esque post-classical electronic fusion, filled with jazz minerals, cannot be diverted from it’s redirected path.
I Don’t Belong To Anyone Reworks EP is released via Lima Limo Records on 31st March in digital format. Preorder your copy now from Hejira’s Bandcamp.
