As the first release on Lustwerk Music not to include Galcher in the production credits, it makes sense that Quavius EP is an extension of what we’ve come to expect from the label: hazy, restrained productions, with sotto voce, sullen vocals. Except now, instead of just having the hallmarks of hip-hop, like much of Galcher’s work, this debut from Florida rapper and producer Quavius resembles a more fully-formed rap record.
The lyricism on display isn’t complicated, but this kind of cloud rap doesn’t require it. Verses canter out at the same pace as the metronome, as a Spanish guitar loops in the first half, before that Southern production really steps to the fore in the second part.
