Obonjan in Croatia is Europe’s first music, arts and well-being island

Roy Ayers, Talaboman, and Matthew Herbert among the first artists to be announced for the July to September programme.

Do not confuse Obonjan with your typical festival serving our increasingly sophisticated yet quotidian needs. Think Desert Island Discs but on steroids. Obonjan island, audaciously leased last year by the team behind Unknown Festival, sitting 1.5 kilometres long and covered in pine and olive trees, will make its first bow this summer providing the serene and very much dreamlike backdrop for 8 weeks of cultural experiences.

Located just off the Dalmatian coast from the ancient Croatian town of Šibenik and with a number of venues to explore on its shores, guests are welcome to immerse themselves in as much or as little as they please. A rolling music programme which already includes names like Roy Ayers, Saul Williams, Matthew Herbert, Talaboman and Poliça, will sit visitors in the islands beautiful stone amphitheatre, whilst Obonjan’s very own resident 25-piece orchestra can be caught performing as a full ensemble or in small splinter sections, playing impromptu sets and serenades around the island.

As well as music, Obonjan will offer its guests – limited to 800 a week – a medley of art and culture, entertainment, food and wellbeing within a carefully curated creative programme that will grow and expand with each year.

It’s a big one to say the least, and we’re as much intrigued as excited to see it all materialise.
