Over the last five years fans of New Orleans hip-hop saviour Jay Electronica have learnt to become a patient bunch, being teased with one-off tracks amongst a mass of speculation about an “imminent” debut album. In 2010 the Louisiana rapper signed with Jay Z’s Roc Nation imprint and, in the summer of 2012, he revealed the tracklist and title of his debut, Act II: Patents of Nobility, featuring Jay Z, Kanye West, Diddy and the late French singer/songwriter Serge Gainsbourg. In 2013 we even got confirmation from Jay Elec’s right hand studio man Just Blaze that the album was finished, explaing in an interview with Vlad TV:
“The situation is Jay moves at his own pace…He always moved at his own pace. I think the problem is now is that before there wasn’t any anticipation. That anticipation came, but he’s still just kinda like ‘Hey, my train’s on schedule.’ He loves to say that. That’s his saying…He has his own personal reasons for the way he moves. There is an album. It’s actually a damn good album.”
But whilst the possibility of ever owning that Jay Electronica debut LP hangs in the balance, there is at least some welcome news that Mass Appeal will be releasing his much-famed ‘Exhibit A’ and ‘Exhibit C’ on vinyl for the first time as part of Record Store Day Black Friday. The limited edition picture disc will be available on November 27th and is going to be released exclusively for RSD, so be fast!
