In 1984 Belizean musician Bredda David Obi AKA Bro. David introduced the world to a new groove he named kungo (or cungo) with his debut LP No Fear. Initially the sound brought together elements of traditional Belizean brukdown, rock, funk, calypso and reggae, but as his discography grew the sound evolved to integrate characteristics of niche Belizean genres like sambai and paranda.
His records were unearthed years later in the basements of record shops in LA and Brooklyn and subsequently edited and remixed by several renowned DJs including DC based DJs Sol Power All-Stars, LA collectors DJ Duckcomb and Heatwave, as well as My Rules Records founder Justin Van Der Volgen. Finding a home on Boston reissue label Cultures of Soul, the originals are reworked into heady cuts and dance floor tested anthems, with our pick ‘Sunshine’ morphed into a cosmic tripped-out dub by Brooklyn-based Van Der Volgen.
