Premiere: Dennis Ayler – Friday Night

Another shining star of South London’s jazzy beat tangled collective 22a is back after his beautifully crafted three-track EP Put It On was released back in May. Now on his own imprint, Dennis Ayler Music, comes a six-track cosmic excursions record destined for both late-night headphone and dancefloor situations.

Today we premiere our favourite track off the record, ‘Friday Night’, fusing 80s sedated funk chords and boogie basslines with quintessentially smooth vocoder treatment that swells through an A to Z jazz scale playbook. Cowbells don’t go a miss alongside a reverb-laced slow snare; suitably time-honoured alongside a hidden vocal sample that adds a melancholic touch to the whole track. Herbie would be proud.
