Ever-dependable in their pan-global approach to dance music, Sofrito look to old friends Alma Negra for the next edition of their Super Singles Series. The Basel-based collective – made up of brothers Dersu & Diego Figuiera, Mario Robles and Dario Rohrbach – return to the label with The Tabanka EP, a raw and percussive middle ground between the Carnival celebrations of the Cape Verde and the afro house dancefloor permutations closer to home.
Saving the best til last, ‘Rambola’ is our pick off the bunch, which we bring you an exclusive full play of. It starts off in a traditional vein, with a rumble of Carnival rhythms, kick drums and hand-held percussion playing off a call-and-response worldplay. At the 90 second mark, swelling chords warn of what’s to come before strings come flooding in from the the Middle East and a repeated synth line continues to build the drama towards a climax of carnival fever.
The Tabanka EP is out now on Sofrito – buy from their website. Alma Negra are also working on a three part series for Basic Fingers with remixes from Osunlade, Esa & Santuri and Truccy.
