Day 1: Dark Sky – Em Cy

Day 1 of our charity Advent Calendar in aid of Help Musicians.

London trio Dark Sky emerged from the creative free-for-all of dubstep’s charred skeleton in 2010, informed by the movement, but never defined by one sound. Their discography ranges from the dayglo garage of ‘Neon’ to the brazen bass music of ‘Confunktion’ and the shimmering deep house of ‘In Brackets’ and, following the release of their album last year, they’ve had a quiet 2015 readying themselves for their next leap forward.

This makes it even more significant for us to present the minimal yet epic ‘Em Cy’ as the inaugural track for our 2015 Advent Calendar. Intricately designed around a murmured chant, each drum hit is painstakingly positioned in just the right place and the result is a track that could easily fit into a Villalobos or Zip set. Dark Sky explain the track in a bit more detail:

“This song started out with a sample from a record called ‘Agua De Beber’ by the 60s Brazilian girl group ‘Quarteto Em Cy’. We really liked the percussive tone of the vocal so we thought it would be cool to have a go at seeing how far we could push the loop by processing, pitching and rearranging it. The vocal already had a lovely hypnotic feel to it which we wanted to expand on. We’re really happy this track is going to see the light of day as we thought it would never get a release. This feels like the perfect platform to share the track with people in aid of Help Musicians UK, a charity close to our hearts. Finally, we would like to say a massive thank you to our good friend Milan Adamik at Master Works Audio for mastering the track in support of the cause.”

Download ‘Em Cy’ from our Bandcamp. It’s pay-what-you-like, with all donations going to Help Musicians, a charity that supports musicians in times of crisis.
