Exclusive: Sly Johnson – I’m Calling U (Frederick Refix)

Peter Oakden is a pretty busy chap. He’s label boss for Soul Free Records and Fifty Fathoms Deep, whose most recent, Gil Scott-Heron sampled release from Trüby, Marlow & Craig Smith comes recommended by Gilles Peterson. As selector and producer, he traverses the house spectrum from balearic to deep house; he DJs under his own name and as Fifty Fathoms Deep (with Craig Smith) and makes music as one half of The True Rebels and under the alias Frederick. A remix he made as the latter really caught our eye, and we’re chuffed to bring it to you exclusively. Oakden gives the original, by French soul singer not to be confused with Syl Johnson, a rugged makeover, burying a short, echoing refrain deep into an after-hours house beat. Still in demo form, it’s brooding and raw but we really dig it. Thanks to Tomson, who first brought this refix to our attention on his We Ctrl radio show.

Look out for Frederick’s debut album dropping Spring 2014, with Episode of Love as the lead single, out now on Miseredits. Also on the horizon is a release with Deeper Shades Recordings.

Sounds Like: Moodymann, Typesun, Nufrequency
