New Artist: Staycen

Altanta-based songstress Staycen is a super-talented soul-queen with a platinum egde. Mystifyingly, she’s unsigned, yet pouring out vibes that’ll wash you straight back into the early noughties ‘golden-age’ of RnB. There’s not too much information on Staycen yet, so I have no interesting facts to offer, except that her EP is free to download at http://staycen.bandcamp.com/ and I haven’t been able to get the chorus of Feel ‘Ya out of my head for weeks. So listen below at your own peril, you have been warned!

New Release: Lucky Paul – Slow Ground EP

London label Somethinksounds (an offshoot of cult culture magazine Somethinkblue) is about to storm the Electronic scene with the soon to be released Slow Ground E.P. by wondrously talented Lucky Paul; a new Electronic producer from New Zealand. Though currently residing in the Electronic epicentre of the world, Berlin, Paul has been on

New Artist: Youngteam

Yesterday, sonic chameleon Travis Stewart (aka Machinedrum and one half of Sepalcure) tweeted the sounds of star pupil Will Johnson (Youngteam) from The New School in New York. Taking influences from Samiyam, Bonobo, Boxcutter and of course both of Travis Stewart’s projects, 19 year old protégé Youngteam has climbed aboard the fast moving ship of loose Garage in a vast ocean of Electronic music. Being a guitarist has pushed his sound into new quarters, with track Seasondeux fusing an acoustic guitar riff with ambient chords, spaced-out arpeggiators and rolling drum hits, in a similar vain to Mount Kimbie. The track is utterly absorbing and we can only dare you to listen below and not get pulled into its nebulous atmosphere. Lets hope we get more of the same in the coming months.

New Artist: MellowHype

By now, every Hip-hop head in the world should be well versed with the movementsof OFWGKTA, a young collective of L.A. rappers/skaters, steered from the front by 19 year old luminary shepherd Tyler the Creator. Within this extraordinarily talented pack are two wolves, Hodgy Beats and Left Brain, entertaining a shared vision of laidback and upbeat Hip-hop vibes, hence their name MellowHype. Left Brain’s beat science melts dream pads with fresh coast drum hits, whilst Hodgy provides the L.A. flow and sharp wit to make this a truly righteous duo. In fast-paced Odd Future style, they released two albums in 2010 and will also be releasing Numbers, their debut album on Odd Future Records, later this year. You can download YelloWhite and BlackenedWhite for free here, and watch this space for more updates on the next big thing to storm out of the Odd Future house of Hip-hop. Below we’ve posted a track off their YelloWhite album and an exclusive live performance of 65, a track off future releaseNumbers.

New Release: Anthony David – 4Evermore (Feat. Algebra & Phonte)

American R&B singer/songwriter Anthony David has brought true R&B back to Georgia with his fourth studio album As Above So Below, released earlier last month. The composition throughout really does take you back to that 90’s vibe of thick strings and soul beats, whilst David’s vocals swim effortlessly round your ears from start to finish. The music video for 4Evermore stages a wedding, where Anthony and R&B princess Algebra take a verse each to express their vows in rich melodies that glide over the groove of DJ Kemit’s solid production. Putting the icing on the wedding cake comes Phonte from Little Brother rapping his two cents about love. This musical matrimony works so well, we can only hope it continues in the future.

New Artist: Throwing Snow

Throwing Snow is a London/Bristol based producer making some very interesting electronic music. In his own words, he writes ‘anything from Folk to Dubstep’, though we haven’t been so lucky as to find the former. Aside from his production skills, TS is also a music consultant at Hear No Evil and CEO of the label A Future Without, featuring loads of artists we love (Baba Yaga and Augustus Ghost in particular). He’s already done remixes for Gold Panda and Kidkanevil, and his most recent release Un Vingt/Cronos has been remixed by the likes of George Fitzgerald and d’Eon. Throwing Snow’s production style is driven by minimal layers; mostly analog synths and splintered 2-step beats. Though each element is often simplistic in its raw terms, he does have a tendency to heavily automate his tracks with gleaming pitch-bends and chop/screw samples. All in all, our kind of music. Below is a track off his most recent release and an older tune called Naked Dance for you to enjoy.

New Artist: Sunclef

Toronto-based producer Sunclef released his debut mini-album a few weeks back and it’s slowly but surely taking over the world. The Tesseract is Instrumental Hip-hop at its finest, with throbbing pads, warm fuzzy basslines and MPC groove. This guy really has come out of nowhere and is now fast establishing himself as THE producer to watch. Go and support Sunclef by buying The Tesseract here, so he can make more music (it’s ‘name your price’, so name it high). Below you’ll find the opening track off the record, dripping with swag.

Full Crate and Mar – Conversations With Her

Full Crate (producer) and Mar (singer) are two musicians from Amsterdam, making some of the most blissed out music we’ve ever heard. Their 2010 collaborative release Conversations with Her is a 5 track concept E.P. offering a lush melting pot of Hip-hop, Soul and Dubstep vibes fused with soothing vocals. Think D’Angelo meets Dilla, Dutch style. More recently though, these guys have been working on separate projects. Mar Variation has got Mar reinterpreting old songs with a new impression, accompanied by some very cinematic videos – (check out the video of Last Christmas below). Following on from his and FS Green’s beat tape Hi-hat Club Vol 5: Eggs and Pancakes, Full Crate has released a 7” The Barb on London based Label Kilawattmusic, which we highly recommend!
