A small town close to Siberia isn’t necessarily a place you’d associate with African rhythms, yet these are among the influences behind the first ever release from <<Serenades>>, a local music community and platform turned label.
They’ve called upon musicians from across the world to contribute to the concept including Lithuanian-based Pletnev, Hard Fist’s Cornelius Doctor and Panorama Channel. Each bring a distinct flavour to the compilation, from shamanic ambient to slomo industrial and percussive cuts.
Our favourite comes from St Petersburg natives Soft Metal, a relatively unheard of duo, who’ve previously appeared on one of Disco Halal’s compilations and have their debut EP for the label in the pipeline this year. ‘Killa Song Yago’ is one of the more sunny cuts on the compilation, with nods to Afro-Latin percussion, disco and psychedelic rock.
