Day 24 of our 2018 charity Advent Calendar, in aid of Julie’s Bicycle. Listen to all this year’s donations.
Idiosyncratic in style and deferent to the seriousness that can sometimes befall dance music, The Pilotwings are establishing themselves as one of France’s most formidable young DJ and production partnerships.
Balearic is a tag that often touches their work, but it’s used in the loosest possible sense: new wave trills, oddball synth-funk, cosmic anomalies and exotica infusions all criss-cross their deep and eccentric productions. Comfortably under 100 bpm, ‘Transition Énergétique’ was originally used as an intro to their live set last year, but the multiple synth layers and “imaginary stories in a fake Iberic language” give the track a personality that deserves more attention. Christmas bells chime but feel more at home in a desert output than sleepy countryside village. Proof of the duo’s talents that even set atmospherics like this can hold their own as fully-fledged works in their own right.
Our 2018 Advent Calendar is in aid of Julie’s Bicycle, a non-profit that supports the creative industry to take action on climate change. All money raised through Bandcamp sales goes directly to Green Riders, a new campaign that will help will create more sustainable collective practices in the music industry.
