Santa Monica born and raised, multi-instrumentalist Nicky Benedek has a uncanny flair for turning out distinctive, sun-drenched boogie, best heard cruising on PPU and Leaving Records. Even when he ups the tempo into housier territories – for Music From Memory sub-label Second Circle and Tom Noble’s Superior Elevation – that knee-dip feeling isn’t far away.
Like his 2011 debut, which featured vocals from the genre’s modern day godfather Dam-Funk, ‘Good Thang’ is an immensely likeable take on the West Coast sound. As the low slung groove switches into the ascending synth notes that close the track, it’s hard not to imagine this soundtracking the closing credits of a hawaiian-shirt clad 80s cop show or blasting from a convertible somewhere along the boulevard. Not such a bad thing on a cold winter’s day.
