Worldwide Awards’ Label of the Year, On The Corner return with an LP from Peruvian duo Dengue Dengue Dengue. In 2016 Gilles Peterson described Pete Buckanan’s mission as a “never-ending quest to support and expose far-off musical cultures around the world”, and they haven’t slowed down yet.
On Semillero, Dengue Dengue Dengue provide six psychedelic excursions akin to Malka Tuti and Multi Culti, fusing rhythms and sounds native to Peru with cosmic synths and downtempo machine funk. ‘Habu Raminibu’, the only track not composed by Dengue Dengue Dengue, incorporates recordings by Jonas Rocha of a healing chant of the Huni Kuin people who live deep in the Amazon where Peru’s border meets Brazil. The label tells us that the collaboration between artist and label “seeks to honour and represent” this heritage, respecting “this rare cultural treasure” that has been bestowed by the Huni Kuin. It comes to us transformed into a stripped back chug, enchanting vocals interplaying with entrancing bleeps over an insistent, but restrained, rhythm section. Dancefloor healing at its best.
Semillero is out 21st September – buy from Bandcamp.
