Album of the year contender and he’s only 16. Was only 16, rather. On The Nireus Years, Into The Light collects the unheard home recordings of Angelo Ioakimoglu, produced at a tender age between 1995 and 1997.
Born and raised in Zografou area of Athens in 1981, he was educated by a father immersed in the 80s world of electronic music and was already experimenting with midi programming, synths and live percussion before he was old enough for clubs. The result range from bucolic new age to dubbed out balearic, Mediterranean DnB to ambient trance. As hinted in the name, the midi sax plays a leading role in ‘u220sax2’, a downtempo new age beauty with keys and faux strings gliding in the warm Greek air.
There’s a naivety to the breadth of the album, but that only adds to its charm. A producer not hardened by the criticism of others or prejudices of more established underground scenes; just playing what he feels and creating an album of understated beauty with a knack for coalescences far beyond his years.
