On a one-way route to tropical house self-destruction, the release of Eleventeen Eston’s debut album four years ago reassured my club-indulged ears that it was okay to like surf rock. Tanner’s esoteric approach to the 90s, with a balearic, funk-not-funk sound endorsed by the inspiringly fluctuating Not Not Fun label, made it an engaging proposition.
Taking some time out to focus on other projects – the new age Wilson Tanner with Andras and his left-field club persona Hugo Gerani – EE is back with a follow-up album on Growing Bin Records. Washed out, psychedelic guitars and new age ambient textures feature strongly on the eleven tracks of At The Water, but it’s propulsive bass and soft groove of ‘The Four Fountains’ that makes it an anomalous standout.
At The Water is out now – buy from Bandcamp.
Eleventeen Eston was the Rising feature on our Worldwide FM show from 26th May.
