The music of Sugarhouse Records has popped up in Monday Morning Mixtapes and STW radio shows aplenty over the years, so we’ve even surprised ourselves that this is the first official coverage of the label. Often found collaborating with label mate Maurice Jr, label head Roy Rozell goes it alone on the label’s fifth release Sounds of Hopwood EP; three tracks that feel more at home on the Canadian Riveria than Roy’s home in suburban Birmingham. Maybe it’s the juxtaposition of grey skies and the Bullring against the playful synth melodies, flubbery basslines and shuffling percussion that makes ‘Last Time Around’ all the more enjoyable. Fans of Pender Street Steppers, Jack J’s solo work and the rest of the slouch house recliners, take note.
