It’s never too long before we hone in again on happenings down under. This time the focus of our attention is Melbourne’s CC:DISCO! AKA Courtney Clarke. Getting her start on radio at the tender age of 15, her first ventures into DJing began some years later in her early 20’s. In the last couple of years her name has started making the rounds, propelled by her incredible RA Mix and storming sets at Pitch, Dimensions and Soundwave, which showcased her tasteful selections deeply rooted in disco, funk and house. Genres that have come under the spotlight in her most recent project, First Light.
Taking on the role of curator for underground imprint Soothsayer, she’s compiled a 12-track compilation focusing on fresh artists from Australia and New Zealand – including the likes of Jace XL, Angophora and Manuel Darquart – sourced through chance meetings, emails and fangirl moments.
Our pick of the bunch comes from River Yarra and Tom Baker, an exclusive track only available on the vinyl release. Both relatively unknown producers, the Australian born pairing have come together for this tension inducing offering. Driving synths and Middle-Eastern-tinged melodies shine on ‘Babylonia’, while the introduction of a beguiling Arabic vocal injects the production with a hefty dose of drama.
