Premiere: Ben Hauke – I Don’t Believe (BAUKES BOP)

Talented South London producer and DJ Ben Hauke, kicks off 2018 with First Takes EP, the second release on Hauke’s own Lewisham-based label Woop Records. In an accomplished five tracks, Hauke demonstrates a sensitivity in execution to the influences of house, broken beat and 90’s hip hop, to which he frankly nods a head towards. This winning combination materialises benevolently in one of our standouts ‘I Don’t Believe (BAUKES BOP)’; an infectious number, conversant in the detail.

Built up from components presented in a sample based format, Hauke feeds our inner hip hop fan with jazz-edged piano chords, vocal hooks and choral loops all scratched onto a heavy driving drum beat. The delineated hanging piano line takes pride as the main melodic thread, swung over deep muffled bass and energetic contrapuntal rhythms from the track’s percussive spine, making for a pleasing broken beat feel. Hauke finally cements a touch of nostalgia as he contours the entire track with a warm vinyl crackle.

First Takes is out 19th January – preorder from Bandcamp now.
