It’s officially autumn, although the blue skies and sunny spells would have us believe otherwise. Lucky for us, Auckland duo Manuel Darquart have given us a perfect soundtrack for this Indian summer.
Having collaborated for several years as DJs and producers, this project was conceived in 2012 illustrating a shared love of all things cosmic and boogie. Fresh off the back of their first 12” release on dreamy imprint Coastal Haze, the pair present their next EP on Childsplay, a London-based label run by friends Cherry B and Big Leg. Beginning as a platform for sharing their favourite tunes and mixes from friends and producers they thought weren’t getting enough recognition, as well as putting on sleazy intimate soirees, Childsplay’s ethos is no more than unadulterated fun and a reminder not to take yourself too seriously.
Our pick of the bunch is cut from the same cloth as a PPU release; ‘I’m Not Over You’ brings you a dose of sleazy downtempo funk. Melding shiny synths, a deep groovy bassline and distant vocals, it recalls the memory of a holiday romance gone by whilst offering a perfect remedy for those post summer love blues. In the words of Childsplay, “don’t let autumn get you down, get down to Manuel instead.”
Birds of Paradiso is out on 24 November – preorder on Childsplay’s bandcamp. If you’re in need of a Thursday night boogie, Childsplay host their monthly Playdate party tonight at Ridley Road Market Bar.
