At their heart a quintet, 30/70 are a loose collective of players from Melbourne who look set to shine an even brighter spotlight on the south Australian city thanks to a fantastic new album released this month on London’s ever outward looking Rhythm Section Intl.
Despite a series of rightly celebrated singles, EPs and mini LPs, Elevate is the label’s first move into full blown album territory, but what a great one to kick off with. Taken from it, is this modern jazz-funk ode to moving on, Steady Hazin,’ as a perfect intro to an LP you’ll be revisiting all winter long; or indeed all summer long for those in the band’s southern hemisphere. Like a fresh update of the pioneering sounds of RAMP and Rotary Connection, or more recently by Jill Scott and D’Angelo, 30/70 are ambitious, progressive and full to the brim with soul.
Elevate is out 27th October – buy from Bandcamp.
