London-based record label Church has been a familiar home for producer Laurence Guy since distributing his debut physical release, the acclaimed Kojak, in 2015. Fittingly, Guy returns to Church for his inaugural LP, Saw You For the First Time. Oscillating in focus, collaborative and instrumental, the album is an emotive and energetic exploration of the ever-expanding spaces electronic music can occupy.
‘Gone’ is the album’s second track following the intro. Joined by Contours, it benefits from the Manchester-based producer’s percussive musical origins, combining 4/4 kicks and claps with a lighter, hyperactive, more free roaming bongo work out. It is these pairings that define the track, aided by euphoric piano melodies, mingling with a bouncing, near-acid bass line that gives way to explorative lead synth work. ‘Gone’ manages to be emotional while sacrificing none of its energy; bumping, warm and exuberant it’s a beautifully balanced and assertive opening. A statement of intent and an indication of the quality that exists on the rest of the LP.
