Back in October we gave you taste of London’s subaqueous house duo Voyeur, which actually wasn’t house-inclined at all. The track, ’Space Voyage’, was off their debut album on Kerri Chandler’s Kaoz Theory imprint and stood out to us with a brooding boom-bap backbone and heady odyssey synthesisers.
Now in 2017, Benson Herbert and Leo Picking are dipping their hands back into deep house, remixing a brand new colourful psychedelic jazz offering from London-based afrobeat-soul-reggae outfit Nubiyan Twist.
If the original track is a sun-smoked daytime adventure, then Voyeur’s remix is definitely resigned for night-time cruising. A saturated key groove is paired with effervescent shakers and ambient trills and textures, creating a perfect storm of duskiness. After setting a stirring backdrop, at 3.35 the deeply soulful female vocals of Nubiyan Twist enter the fray – and it’s utterly dazzling. Wooden-sounding bass stabs give the track its groove, as freestyle jazzy Fender Rhodes licks grace up and down the piano floor.
