Jazz re:freshed have long flown the flag for UK jazz and all its evolving incarnations. Today they introduce us to beautifully composed, soulfully blended jazz courtesy of Trinity alumnus Daniel Casimir. Similarly, Casimir as been doing his thing for a minute, having provided his commanding double bass tones for the likes of Lonnie Liston Smith, Jason Robello to Ashley Henry and Nubya Garcia. Now set to release his forthcoming EP Escapee, we are delighted to be able to premiere it’s lead track which also comes as a free download.
‘Really For Always’ enters with a warm slow sombre swing, drawn out by tight unison accents from Joe Armon-Jone’s elegiac keyboard and Casimir’s deep resonant double bass, backed up by the round thudding kick drum of Moses Boyd. Amidst a measured floundering of cymbals, Casimir’s backline interplay beautifully with an occasional swell from Shirley Tetteh on electric guitar; setting the scene for the pure serene vocals of front woman and co-writer, Tess Hirst. Hirst is assuredly elegant through calm verses and double time choruses, with each return of the latter, Boyd increasing his connection of rolling strokes in an almost shuffling bebop style. During an allotted middle section, guitar and keyboard give rhythmically tight and melodically twisting solos, right before the whole band hold their own as Boyd lets loose practically chasing the tracks close.
Escapee is released via Jazz re:freshed late March and will be available via all digital platforms.
