Day 20: Bastien Keb – Night Hustle

Day 20 of our charity Advent Calendar in aid of The Steve Reid Foundation.

Bastien Keb was one of the surprise packages of 2015, with a debut that became one of our favourites of the year. Drinking In The Shadow of Zizou sat nicely alongside the other esoteric soul releases on One Handed music like Paul White and Mo Kolours, showing off Bastien’s ability as both a multi-instrumentalist and singer. He’s had a quiet 2016, but is gearing up for a sophomore album release in 2017, and we’re delighted to preview a track from it as today’s Advent entry.

Here’s a few words from Bastien about the track: “can I get away with saying ‘Night Hustle’ is a prologue to the film Uncle Buck’? It’s actually more to do with forgiveness but that sounds a bit serious and pretentious.”

Download ‘Night Hustle’ from our Bandcamp. It’s pay-what-you-like, with all proceeds going to The Steve Reid Foundation, a charity founded by Gilles Peterson that aims to support musicians in dedication to the visionary jazz drummer. Alech is taken from Habibi Funk 004, which you can also buy from Bandcamp.
